Catching Handicap Parking Law Breakers

illegal handicap parkingIt’s a crime that has raged on for decades and very simply, there’s almost never a situation where the law breaker isn’t aware that they’re breaking the law. The crime? Parking in a handicap parking spot when you’re not legally allowed.

Very simply, it’s a case of lazy able-bodied individuals that don’t want to walk so far. In most cases, the worst parking space at the mall is typically under 100 yards from the door.

What’s even more surprising is that the rules are not rocket science. If you have a disability that doesn’t allow you to walk long distances, you simply apply for permit and you (and only you) are allowed to park in the special parking spots  by simply displaying the permit from your rear view mirror.  And it can’t be used by someone else when you’re not there.  That’s not a lot of rules to remember, but it’s a rule broken every day.

The most important thing to remember is that if you’re illegally taking up one of these parking areas, you’re taking the spot away from individuals that actually need it. People with varying levels of disabilities simply must have that option.

What’s even more scary is just how rampant the problem has become. The small town of Niles, Ohio wrote 22 citations in under 2 months and the violators come from all walks of life including state politicians and even police officers.

Websites like HandicappedFraud.org puts the power of angered citizens online by allowing you to report violators and we’ve even covered an app by Parking Mobility that allows you to report them on the go.

The video below from 20/20 that covers a sting operation goes to show that it’s not a scenario of individuals that aren’t aware of their wrong-doings, but people who are blatantly trying to game the system and in reality, they themselves don’t even believe the words that come out of their mouths knowing full well what they were doing.
