AMS Vans Wins the Run, Walk ‘n’ Roll for People with Disabilities!

Every weather forecaster in the city predicted it. There was a high probability for heavy rain on March 4th, the day of FODAC’s annual Run, Walk ‘n’ Roll fundraising event for Friends of Disabled Adults and Children, and Mother Nature did NOT disappoint. It was, as we say in the South, a certified frog-choker!

I was there with AMS Vans’ general manager Dallas Crum, mobility consultant JP Jackson, and our two race participants, work-flow manager Josh Sheppard and assistant shop manager Kody Ledbetter, who make sure our handicap vans are properly equipped for their new owners and meet all Federal safety standards.

We didn’t let the rain stop us, however. We brought one of our wheelchair vans for sale to the event and deployed the ramp, so the crowd might explore the van and get one of our gift bags filled with water, granola bars, lip balm, and a coupon for a $1000 discount on the price of a van for race participants.

Unfortunately, the drizzly weather did stop some people from coming out for an event that included the opportunity to meet Aimee Copeland, the young woman who lost her arms and legs as result of a horrible infection brought on by a zip-line accident. There were more of our gift bags left over than we anticipated, because the smaller-than-expected crowd was focused on staying dry, meeting Aimee Copeland, and participating in their race.

The good news is–the donations had already been made online, so the turnout didn’t affect FODAC’s fundraising effort one drop (sorry, couldn’t resist!), and AMS Vans’ own Josh Sheppard came in first in the five-mile race, with Kody Ledbetter taking fourth place. In the photo below, Josh is on the left, standing next to Aimee Copeland. Not even a deluge could dampen the spirits of the folks who came out to have fun!

You can still donate to FODAC on their website. The mission of this outstanding organization is to provide durable medical equipment (DME), like wheelchairs, walkers, and hospital beds, at little or no cost to individuals with disabilities and their families to improve their quality of life. To date, FODAC has obtained and distributed more than 29,000 wheelchairs since 1986!

We’re all looking forward to next year’s Run, Walk ‘n’ Roll–rain or shine! And congratulations to Josh and Kody, who are winners here, too!
