Surf’s Up for Paraplegic Mom!

A 50-year-old mom has captured the attention of the masses after a video was made of her surfing off the west coast of Australia. What makes this so unusual is that Pascale Honore is a paraplegic. She was paralyzed in a car accident 18 years ago and is riding the waves duct-taped to the back of a surfer. Yes, you read that right, duct tape.

The video, which has gone viral, shows Honore and 23-year-old Tyron Swan, a professional diver, catching waves together. Honore is held to his back with a backpack that has holes cut out for the legs, and duct tape securing her to Swan’s back from the legs, waist, and shoulders.

The pair arrive at the beach, get suited up, and hit the waves. After a few attempts that result in fairly typical surfing “wipe outs,” a jet ski comes to the rescue, and the pair ride the waves like pros.

After her accident, Honore resigned herself to the fact that her paralysis was permanent after six months of rehabilitation. She didn’t want her paralysis to define who she was or what life would be like moving forward.

“People would say to me, ‘Picture yourself walking again.’ One day I just told myself, ‘Well maybe I could walk one day, but in the meantime what am I supposed to do?’ That’s when I decided to just get on with it. You either look at what you’ve got or you look at what you haven’t got,” she said.

Honore’s sons surf, and she grew frustrated watching them from the sidelines. Swan, a family friend, decided to take matters into his own hands and came up with the idea, much to the dismay of those around him, who thought the idea was pretty crazy.

Following the advice of some well-meaning folks, he attempted to surf with a weighted book bag, but found that the weights made him sink if he fell, as they weren’t buoyant like a person would be in the water.

It certainly looks like the pair’s crazy idea worked, and they seem to be having fun. We probably wouldn’t recommend duct tape as a method for surfing for everyone, but the pair seems to be getting it done, and we certainly give them kudos for their creativity.
